An NVQ Level 2 in construction proves you can do your trade safely, on a live job, to a nationally agreed standard. It isn’t a classroom course. Nobody passes it by sitting through lectures or ticking boxes on a worksheet.<\/span><\/p>

Instead, an assessor watches you work, asks you questions about what you’re doing and why, and signs off each unit once your work meets the standard. The<\/span> official CSCS qualifications page<\/a><\/strong> describes NVQs as a measure of competence against a National Occupational Standard, assessed through practical work and a portfolio of evidence you build up as you go.<\/span><\/p>

For most site trades, this qualification is also the gateway to the blue CSCS Skilled Worker card. Scotland runs the same system under the SVQ name, and the fundamentals don’t change.<\/span><\/p>

A construction NVQ is a work-based qualification. You need to be doing the job, on a real site, for real clients, because that’s where the evidence comes from. It won’t suit DIYers or anyone hoping to qualify without site work behind them.<\/span><\/p>

CSCS says the five-year version can't be renewed, and holders are expected to finish their qualification before it runs out.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/path><\/svg>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCollege leavers with a Level 2 or Level 3 diploma: <\/b>A classroom diploma in bricklaying or site carpentry teaches the skills, but CSCS is clear that these courses don't meet the N\/SVQ Level 2 competence threshold for a skilled card. The NVQ is the step that turns that training into recognised site competence.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/path><\/svg>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExperienced tradespeople with no paperwork: <\/b>Plenty of good bricklayers, joiners and groundworkers learned on the job and never got certified.     There’s no single “construction NVQ”. Each trade has its own qualification, built from units that CITB bases on the National Occupational Standards for that occupation. Every pathway mixes two things: core units about working safely and properly on site, and trade units about the work itself.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    CITB’s recommended structure for plastering, for example, sets three mandatory standards for every route: conforming to general health, safety and welfare, conforming to productive work practices, and moving, handling or storing resources. Bricklaying and carpentry pathways follow the same pattern.<\/span><\/p>

      This is where your pathway shows. A bricklayer on the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations, for instance, completes units on setting out and erecting masonry structures, then picks at least one optional unit such as drainage, thin joint masonry or repair and maintenance.<\/span><\/p>
