It is the vertical height difference between the edges of two adjacent tiles, and on large format porcelain it is unforgiving. A 1mm step across a 1200mm plank catches the light, catches the eye, and catches the client&#8217;s attention long before anything else about the job does.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tile levelling system exists to control that variable during the setting window, while the adhesive is still workable and the tile can still be persuaded. Manufacturers work within tolerances defined by BS EN 14411, but a permitted deviation on a 300mm tile becomes a visible one when scaled to 1200mm.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put two crowned tiles side by side and the centre of one meets the edge of the other at a different plane. This is why offset patterns matter so much on long tiles.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5e20d83 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5e20d83\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Offset Question\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0ac492b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0ac492b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The widely applied rule is a maximum 33% offset on any tile with a side over 15in nominal. This comes from ANSI A108.02, clause 4.3.8.2, an American standard rather than a British one. It states the offset shall be a maximum of 33% unless the tile manufacturer specifies otherwise, and that if a greater offset is specified, the specifier and owner must approve the mock-up and accept the lippage.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be precise about the status. ANSI does not bind you in the UK. What does bind you is the tile manufacturer&#8217;s fixing instruction, and most large format manufacturers now specify one third or less for exactly the same reason ANSI does. Some manufacturer specifications for tiles over 600mm tighten this further, so check the tile data sheet against the floor you have.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the substrate is outside that, the correct response is a levelling compound. Not more adhesive, and not more clips. Burying a hollow in a thick adhesive bed introduces differential shrinkage, extended cure times and a real risk of debonding under load. A tile levelling system used to force a tile down into a deep bed simply transfers stress into the adhesive as it cures.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e540ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3e540ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Screed Preparation\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aecccab elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aecccab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Priming is part of this, and calcium sulphate deserves specific attention.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anhydrite and calcium sulphate screeds must be tested for residual moisture and mechanically prepared, with laitance removed, before a compound goes down. Cement based adhesives react with calcium sulphate in the presence of moisture, forming ettringite, which expands and causes failure at the interface. Fastest to place, entirely consumable.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a tiler working commercially at volume, wedge systems generally win on cost per square metre.
